Apparently it was contaminated with gasoline. I wouldn’t have thought that would be “emergency alert” worthy, though it is a safety issue.

I guess it depends on how contaminated it really is

I actually think it’s smart to do an emergency alert on this one. It just might keep someone from going boom.

I didn’t realize kerosene could still be readily bought.

It’s alert worthy, considering the ramifications.

I believe it is the cheapest way to heat homes.

Using emergency alerts for things that are borderline emergencies is a slippery slope.
I fear in 15 years we will get amber/emergency alerts like “attention ! Buy one get whoppers at burger king on now”

Considering it could explode your heater or kerosene lamp I think it’s worthy.

Like others have said, use volatile gas in a kerosene heating appliance could result in real harm, this is a good emergency alert.

Contaminated enough that the fuel station is the one who reported it. I can’t imagine the Shell station would want to issue a recall if it wasn’t a large enough issue.

yep. gasoline in a space heater=you’re gonna have a bad time.

Putting gasoline in a kerosene heater could turn it into a bomb.
![]() 02/06/2019 at 16:17 |

sure. I see gas stations here and there which still have kerosene pumps on the lot.

I remember back in the 80s when kerosene heaters were getting popular. A lot of people were getting killed, burned, or burning their house down because they put gasoline in them.

The thing that I’m a bit amused by is that it was sold to 46 people, from what I read. Makes me wonder what the emergency alert with the fewest affected people has been.

Yeah, kerosene heater + gasoline = boom

Pay attention in chemistry class, kids, putting gasoline in a kerosene heater would definitely lead to an emergency. Filling a whole bunch of kerosene heaters with gasoline and placing them in houses all over a town would be a disaster.
While we’re at it, don’t light a grill with gasoline unless you know what you’re doing.

This has made me realize that I really only associate these alerts with hazardous weather. I agree it’s good to see it being used for other relevant purposes.

Im picturing the truck driver pumping into the wrong manhole
![]() 02/06/2019 at 16:26 |

It’s still fairly prevalent, especially for emergency heaters around here.
![]() 02/06/2019 at 16:28 |

How contaminated it is probably depends on how quickly the truck driver realized..

Are there any applications for kerosene where the presence of a little gasoline in the mix wouldn’t matter? I can’t think of any right off hand.

We had an emergency alert in Michigan last week during the extreme cold, there was a fire at a natural gas distribution center and the gas company was literally going to run out of gas due to the demand.
We all got an alert asking us to turn down thermostats to 65, or lower if we were going to be out of the house. They were hoping they wouldn’t run out and leave people without any heat.
A bunch of people were pissed about the alert. A bunch of people turned up their heat because they’re ass holes. Thankfully the non ass hole population of Michigan came together and turned down the heat and there weren’t any homes that lost heat when we had -40 wind chills.

We have people here refusing to shovel sidewalks just because the news published reminders. Some days I feel like we deserve to go extinct.

LOL, I’ve started a bonfire with gas before. It made half of my beard all crispy crumbly, and I had to trim the other side to match.

Kero and used oil 50/50 does an excellent job of getting things going while also not being explodey.
